Fostering an Animal for Save-A-Dog Scheme

Foster Homes for Cats Needed Desperately

At present we are experiecing an unprecedented increase in the number of cats
entering our pound and shelter. All the cats and kittens will be cared for and,
except for the few that cannot be socialised, saved.

This puts an enormous strain on our organisation both in terms of cost and
human resources. We desperately need help with fostering, especially mothers
and kittens, and with donations of food, kitty litter, etc.

If you think you may be able to help in some way please phone Pam on 0418 389 810
or (03) 9885 1188 and if necessary leave a message so we can return your call.

Fostering for Save-A-Dog Scheme
Foster carers take a dog or cat into their home and treat them like one of the family. We're always delighted to find suitable foster homes! If you're interested in becoming a foster carer, please phone us on
(03) 9824 7928
or (03) 9885 1188.

Why Foster?

First and foremost, to save the life of an animal. This enables Save-A-Dog Scheme to save as many dogs and cats as possible. Secondly, fostering is a great way to have the pleasure of animal companionship without the lifelong commitment. It provides the dog or cat with a stable caring environment while we look for a permanent home. And it provides you with the pleasure of watching a sometimes confused, frightened animal develop confidence and social skills ... and this makes the transition from the shelter situation to a new permanent home much easier for the animal.

What does it entail?

All the normal responsibilities of a carer of an animal companion. Foster carers are required to take the dog or cat into their own home and treat them like one of the family. The animal is normally fostered for as long as it takes to find it a home. This time can vary considerably.

What does it do for the animal?
The animal learns manners and socialisation and is much less stressed than he/she would be in a shelter environment. Dogs who learn to bond and be confident in a consistent environment are able to do so again in a new home. By teaching them manners and basic obedience skills, you assist them to become the sort of companion that most families want. Often they have come from a difficult situation, and restoring their confidence and trust is an important step in developing a dog who is well mannered, tolerant, loving and responsive.

How much does it cost?

The cost of food and the time it takes to care for them. Save-A-Dog Scheme covers veterinary expenses. Our dogs and cats are desexed, vaccinated, wormed and microchipped before coming to your home. The animal comes with basic equipment such as a collar and ID tags.
