Volunteering

Would You Like to Be a Save-A-Dog Scheme Volunteer?

As an organisation that relies on volunteers for its very existence, your input as a potential volunteer is much needed. Volunteers assist with many tasks including:

• Cleaning the kennels and cattery

• Feeding

• Grooming

• Helping in the office

• Helping with laundry and dishes

• Handy-person jobs

Some volunteers may progress to walking dogs and hands-on care of the animals.

Some volunteers come for a three-hour session in the morning or afternoon. We endeavour to have a roster for volunteers to make sure we don’t have too many one day and not enough the next.

HOW TO ENQUIRE ABOUT VOLUNTEERING:
Ring Julie Johnston at the shelter on (03) 9824 7928 during business hours on Monday, Tuesday or Friday. Please don't email or SMS us about volunteering as Julie coordinates volunteers and you'll get a much quicker response by ringing her directly.

Please note that all volunteers must be 18 years of age or older (see explanation below) and will need a current tetanus vaccination before starting with Save-A-Dog Scheme.

Age Requirement for Volunteering

Unfortunately, due to reasons beyond our control, Save-A-Dog Scheme is unable to accept voluntary work at the pound and shelter premises from people under 18 years of age.

By definition this means we are unable to take people under 18 years who may be undertaking community service, work experience, Duke of Edinburgh Award or similar projects.

Save-A-Dog Scheme does however wish to encourage, as much as possible, the interest and support of this age group; to this end, projects which do not involve direct participation at the shelter are appreciated but do need to be discussed, and permission must be sought for any project involving the use of our name.

If you would like to discuss how people under 18 (or indeed any age) can help our work, please phone us on (03) 9885 1188, leave a message with your phone number said clearly and repeated and briefly state your reason for phoning and we will return your call.

The New "Gippsland Network Group" — Can you Spare Some Time, Any Time?

Save-A-Dog Scheme is an incorporated, non-profit, community-based organisation controlled and operated by volunteers with the help of paid staff. It operates as a registered animal shelter in Glen Iris, Melbourne and combines this with foster care in the community. Save-A-Dog scheme has a no-kill philosophy and is a “coal-face” organisation that saves hundreds of dogs each year and seeks, by example, to provide a better way of treating animals.

Save-A-Dog Scheme works closely with the Latrobe community and local council to re-home stray and unwanted dogs from the Gippsland area. Given the partnership between Save-A-Dog scheme and the Gippsland region, we are looking for volunteers to join a local network group based in the Latrobe Valley. The purpose of the network group is to support the work of Save-A-Dog Scheme in the Latrobe Valley. We’re looking for volunteers who can assist in some or all of the following areas:

• Providing short-term foster homes for dogs. You will need to be able to provide a safe and loving environment for a foster dog for a temporary period of time.

• Providing transport for dogs from the pound to possibly the local vet, foster homes and on occasion to Melbourne.

• Working with the Save-A-Dog Scheme network group to assist in developing and implementing processes that help to re-home as many dogs as possible

• Assisting in raising community awareness in the Gippsland region about Save-A-Dog Scheme’s mission and about responsible dog ownership

• Assisting in establishing and developing networks of communication for people involved in foster care and re-homing of dogs.

We’re looking for people who are passionate about the welfare of dogs and who want to assist in providing them with a second chance to be part of a loving home.

If you can spare a few hours each week or perhaps just once a month and you share a passion for helping to rescue and re-home dogs, we’d love to hear from you! For more information or to let us know you're interested, please phone or email Pam or Margie at Save-A-Dog Scheme on (03) 9824 7928 or
admin@saveadog.org.au.
